Maybe on some occasion, you have missed playing a video game with a controller on your computer. If so and you have a current console, you should know that it is very possible that you can use its controls on your computer. In the following lines, I want to explain the steps to follow in order to connect an Xbox controller to your computer.
In the past, it was necessary to resort to third-party software to be able to do this, but Windows 10 already natively accepts the controllers of the Xbox One, so the process to connect the controller is very fast and natural.
Despite this, it is important to keep some things in mind so that everything works correctly. First of all, know what version of the Xbox controller you have.
Identify the version of your Xbox controller
Microsoft released two different versions of the Xbox One controller. One of them has Bluetooth connectivity and the other does not. This means that one of the controllers can be used wirelessly on a computer, while the other can only be used wired.
To identify if your controller has Bluetooth, look at the Xbox button. If it is surrounded by the same piece of plastic as the rest of the buttons on the front of the remote (like the one in the image above) it does have a Bluetooth connection.
On the other hand, if the Xbox button is made of the same plastic as the triggers on the top of the controller, the connectivity is not Bluetooth and you will be not able to use the controller wirelessly. It is somewhat annoying, but you can use the remote with your PC using a USB cable.
Now that you know how to identify the remote that you have, you can go on to the corresponding section to learn how to connect it to your computer.

- We choose Xbox Wireless Controller or Xbox Elite Wireless Controller from the list.
- Once the controller is connected, the Xbox button will stay on solid.
If we have to use the Xbox wireless adapter for Windows 10, the steps to follow are more or less the same, the only thing that we must have the adapter correctly connected and configured:
- We turn on the PC and log in.
- We connect the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows to the computer.
- We turn on the controller by pressing the Xbox button, which will begin to flash.
- We press and hold the Pair button on the Xbox wireless adapter.
- A small light will blink for a few seconds.
- Now we press and hold the Pair button on the Xbox controller. The Xbox button will begin to flash faster.
- Once connected, the Xbox button will stay on solid.
The first thing you should do is click on the start button on your computer and then on the gear icon to access Windows settings. Once inside, click on Devices and access the Bluetooth tab.
When you’re inside, grab the controller and press the Xbox button until the light comes on. Then press and hold the pairing button at the top. You should hold it down for a few seconds, specifically until the white light starts to flash much faster.
Now go back to the computer and click on Add Bluetooth or another device and in the new window that will appear choose the Bluetooth option. When you do this, the PC will search for all the devices within its reach in pairing mode and one of them will be the remote.
Click on Xbox Wireless Controller and the connection process will be finished. Windows will recognize it perfectly and configure it to be used in any PC game that is compatible with controllers. Of course, in the game settings you can configure what each button or trigger does if you need it.
To get a better performance it is important to have our remote updated. Also, it is important to know that Bluetooth does not support add-ons such as headphones, chat pad or the Xbox stereo adapter and also, it is only recommended to connect a controller.
❆ Connect Xbox controller to a PC via cable
In case your remote does not have a Bluetooth connection, you will have to use a USB cable to connect the remote
For this you need a USB-A to micro-USB cable. You must connect the micro-USB end to the Xbox controller connector and the other end to the computer.
Once you connect it, turn on the console controller by pressing the Xbox button until the light appears. When the computer is on, it will notify you that it has detected a new device and will start the installation.
Once installed, Windows will make all the necessary configurations and after a few seconds it will inform you that the installation has finished. From this moment on, the controller will be ready to be used in all compatible games in the same way as the wireless controller.
